JPG and PNG store pixels in fundamentally different ways. JPG uses lossy compression tuned for photographs β it discards fine detail to achieve small files, and every re-save discards a little more. PNG is lossless: what you put in is exactly what you get out, every time. Converting a JPG to PNG takes the image as it currently exists and freezes it in a format where no further degradation can occur. It's important to understand what this does not do: detail the JPG already threw away is gone forever β conversion prevents future loss, it can't restore past loss.
Expect the PNG to be noticeably larger than the JPG β often 3β10× β because lossless storage of photographic detail is expensive. That trade-off is worth it in the situations below, and wasteful otherwise.
