How to Convert PDF Pages to Images
- Upload your PDF. Rendering happens locally in your browser using PDF.js (the same engine Firefox uses to display PDFs) — the document is never uploaded.
- Choose format and resolution. PNG for sharp text and diagrams, JPG for photo-heavy pages where file size matters. Higher scale factors produce sharper, larger images.
- Convert and download. Each page renders to its own image, downloadable individually or all at once.
Why Turn a PDF into Images at All?
Platforms that don't accept PDFs. Instagram, Twitter/X posts, WhatsApp statuses, Slack previews, and most website builders want images. Converting a flyer, menu, or infographic PDF to PNG lets you post it where your audience actually is, with an inline preview instead of a download link.
Embedding in documents and slides. Dropping a page from a report into PowerPoint, Google Slides, or a Word document is far easier as an image — no embedded-object weirdness, renders identically everywhere.
Guaranteed appearance. An image can't reflow, substitute fonts, or lose form data. When a page must look exactly the same on every device — a signed form, a certificate, a design proof — a rendered image is the safest currency. Choosing Resolution: DPI and Scale Explained
A PDF page has physical dimensions (A4 is 8.27×11.69 inches) but no inherent pixel count — pixels are decided at render time. At 72 DPI an A4 page becomes roughly 595×842 px (fine for thumbnails), at 150 DPI about 1240×1754 px (good for screens and slides), and at 300 DPI about 2480×3508 px (print quality, and the resolution OCR software prefers). Higher resolution means visibly sharper small text but roughly quadruple the file size for each doubling — pick the lowest setting that's sharp at your target display size, and compress the result with the Image Compressor if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
PNG or JPG — which should I pick?
PNG for pages that are mostly text, line art, or diagrams — it keeps edges perfectly crisp. JPG for pages dominated by photographs, where its compression shrinks files dramatically with no visible cost. When unsure, PNG is the safe default for documents.
Is the text in the output image still selectable?
No — rendering rasterizes everything into pixels. That's sometimes the point (nothing can be trivially copied or edited), but if you need editable text later, keep the original PDF alongside the images.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
Unlock it first by opening it with its password and saving an unprotected copy. The converter deliberately doesn't bypass encryption.
Why is my converted image blurry?
The render scale was too low for how the image is being viewed. Re-convert at a higher scale — text that will be read on a laptop or phone screen generally needs at least 150 DPI equivalent.
Does this work for large documents?
Yes — pages render one at a time, so even long documents convert reliably; memory only becomes a factor at very high resolutions. For extracting just a few pages first, use the PDF Splitter and convert the extract.
