One reason dominates: file size. PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which is wonderful for graphics and terrible for photographs — a photographic PNG is routinely 5–10× larger than a visually identical JPG. If a photo is going on a website, into an email, or through an upload form with a size cap, JPG is almost always the right container. Converting a 8 MB PNG screenshot of a photo to a 900 KB JPG changes nothing you can see and everything about how fast it loads and whether the form accepts it.
The second reason is compatibility with strict systems: some government portals, printing services, and legacy applications accept only JPG. Conversion here takes seconds and runs entirely in your browser — no upload, no queue.
JPG has no alpha channel. If your PNG has a transparent background — a logo, a cut-out product shot, a sticker — those transparent pixels must become some color in the JPG, typically white. A white-background logo JPG placed on a dark website shows an ugly white box; that's not a conversion bug, it's the format's nature. Keep transparent assets as PNG, and convert to JPG only images that are fully opaque rectangles anyway — photos, screenshots of full windows, scans. JPG quality is a dial, not a switch. At 90–95%, output is visually indistinguishable from the PNG and still dramatically smaller.
